The term “corrugated” refers to a specific type of material that is actually composed of three different sheets of container board, which are basically like thick paperboard. The two sheets on the outside are flat liners and the sheet in the middle has a rippled shape. The abbreviation RSC means Regular Slotted Container. RSC boxes have four flaps that meet in the middle and are taped closed. The two outer flaps are usually half the width of the container and meet in the center when the box is closed.

Corrugated boxes are rated for strength using a # Pound Test rating or an ECT (Edge Crush Test) rating. A 200# test box is rated to hold up to 65 lbs. of box and contents while the 275# box can hold up to 95 lbs. A 350# test box is rated to hold up to 120 lbs. of box and contents. The ECT rating is reported in pounds per lineal inch of load bearing edge (lb/in). For example, a box with an ECT of 32 can withstand 32 pounds of weight on each inch of its edges.
